In 2003 the Summer School „History Takes Place” was organized in St. Petersburg from August 28 to September 8. This happened in conjunction with the tercentennial anniversary of the foundation of the city. As a European metropolis, St. Petersburg repeatedly lays at the intersections of the great lines of the continent’s history and thus developed qualities of a laboratory of modernity. After the end of the Soviet Union the city celebrates both, a comeback as large municipality as well as its re-entry into the circle of the European metropolises thereby representing the great political turning points of the 20th century.
Scientifically the Summer School was led by the historian and essayist Karl Schlögel (Frankfurt/Oder).On this basis the book “Sankt Petersburg – Schauplätze einer Stadtgeschichte” was published in 2007. It was conceived by the organizers and publishers Karl Schlögel, Frithjof Benjamin Schenk and Markus Ackeret. In 24 contributions on the history of St. Petersburg and its inhabitants, the book invites not only to approach scientifically the metropolis, but also to meet with the Russian history off the tourist paths in the urban area.
